K-9 Unit

The Elizabeth Police Department has one K-9 handler, Frank Hurst, who handles two dogs: Carlene, and Bob. K-9 Handler Hurst is a highly trained and decorated handler. EPD's K-9 team frequently assists other agencies when requested with everything from homicides to lost persons.

K-9 Handler Hurst has been with EPD since 2017 and he has been a K-9 handler for over 19 years. K-9 Handler Hurst is also part of a nonprofit group called Bloodhound Man Trackers. He has helped solve numerous missing persons and homicide cases in his career.

Kilo

K-9 Kilo (End of Watch: 12/19/2019)

K-9 Kilo was a nine year old male Belgian Malinois. He specialized in narcotic detection, tracking, and patrol K-9 functions.

On December 19th, 2019, K9 Officer Kilo had to be put down due to ongoing health problems. He faithfully served K9 Handler Hurst for over 8 years at both EPD and Bloodhound Man Trackers. During this time he helped solve countless crimes. K9 Officer Kilo is greatly missed.

Radar

K-9 Radar (End of Watch: 03/09/2022)

K-9 Radar was a ten year old male Bloodhound. K-9 Radar specialized in human remains and tracking. K-9 Radar was a member of NECRO search international and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. K-9 Radar received several accolades during his service including:

  • AKC Award for Canine Excellence for Uniformed Service K-9's in 2016
  • American Bloodhound Clubs Meritorious Service award in 2016

On March 9th, 2022, K-9 Radar had to be put down due to ongoing health problems. He faithfully served K-9 Handler Hurst for over 10 years at both EPD and Bloodhound Man Trackers. During this time he helped solve countless crimes. K-9 Radar is greatly missed.

Bob

K-9 Bob 

K-9 Bob is a 2.5 old Belgian Malinois. He specializes in drug and narcotic detection, as well as patrol functions.

Carlene

K-9 Carlene

K-9 Carlene is a 2.5 year old bloodhound. She specializes in locating human remains, and tracking. K-9 Carlene is a "proven" bloodhound, which means she has been verified and evidence she has provided has held up in court. So far in her short career, she has assisted 12 different agencies in three states.
