Can I ride ATV's or other off highway vehicles on Town of Elizabeth Streets?

Yes you can, with certain restrictions. Please check the forms tab for the ATV and OHV resolution.

 

Do I have to register my dog with the Town of Elizabeth?

Yes. Town of Elizabeth Code 7-7-200, Dog license required.

  • Any person having custody of any dog three (3) months of age or older for seven (7) days shall procure a dog license. License fees shall be paid annually to the Town Clerk. License fees shall be five dollars ($5.00) for each neutered male or spayed female dog, and ten dollars ($10.00) for each unsterilized dog. All dog licenses issued hereunder shall be valid for one (1) calendar year. Upon collection of the dog license fee by the Town Clerk, a dated receipt shall be issued stating the name and address of the owner, dog tag number, description of dog, together with an Elizabeth dog license tag stamped with a serial number. The dog's license tag shall be affixed to its collar or chain.

Does the Elizabeth Police Department mail out free police shoulder patches upon request?

While the Elizabeth Police Department sincerely appreciates the interest and support, we are unable to provide police shoulder patches due to security reasons.

How and where do I pay a Municipal Court Penalty Assessment?

Municipal tickets are to be paid to the Town of Elizabeth Court Clerk at the Elizabeth Town Hall. There are several ways to pay:

  • In-person at Town Hall located at 151 S. Banner Street, Elizabeth, CO, 80107.

Note:

It's important to understand that a municipal summons is not the same as a penalty assessment. If you receive a municipal summons you must appear in court on the date listed on the front of the summons.

How can I pick up my property from EPD

How can I schedule a Ride-A-Long? What are the Rules?

Civilian Ride Along

The Elizabeth Police Department is committed to fostering strong community involvement with our citizens, who we are proud to serve. The concept of community oriented policing strives for the building of partnerships within the community to solve unidentified issues. Community Policing is just not a program for us, it is something that we engage in with the community and is part of our values. With this in mind, we invite citizens to observe and learn about the patrol function through the Citizen  Ride Along Program. Please understand that for your safety you may participate as an observer only and will be under the direct control of your host officer at all times.

In order to participate in our program:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You will be required to sign a waiver prior to your ride along.
  • We ask that you maintain a neat, professional appearance during your Ride Along.
  • You may not, in any circumstances, be armed with any type of weapon, with the exception of outside POST certified police officers.

How do I file a police report?

To file a police report you must come in to the Elizabeth Police Department located at 425 S. Main St. You may print and complete certain forms ahead of time by accessing our forms page.

How do I report an accident?

The Elizabeth Police Department investigates all accidents that occur within Town limits. To report an accident that occurred within the Town of Elizabeth, please call 303-660-7500.

How many dogs can I have in Town?

 If you have more than three (3) dogs you must contact the Town of Elizabeth at 303-646-4166 to apply for a kennel permit.

 

Town of Elizabeth Code 7-7-250, Kennel permit.

  • (a) A kennel permit is required for a private kennel that consists of more than three (3) and less than eight (8) dogs of more than four (4) months of age, harbored on any premises, building or structure. Dogs are required to be licensed within the Town.
  • (b) A permit shall be issued by the Town upon completion of an application containing the following information:
    • (1) Name and phone number of the applicant;
    • (2) Address of the kennel site;
    • (3) Copy of verification of Town dog licenses for all dogs;
    • (4) Veterinary information; and (5) Emergency contact number.
    • (c) Kennel permits may be revoked for cause by the Town Administrator; cause may include, but is not limited to, excessive nuisance complaints, a charge and conviction of cruelty to animals, excessive number of dogs or dogs being unlicensed.

How many signs can I have on my property?

Town of Elizabeth code 16-12-70 defines how many signs you may have on residential lots:

  • (a) Signs on residential lots shall comply with the standards set forth in this Section.
  • (b) Instructional signs. Instructional signs are permitted on residential lots in compliance with the following:
    • (1) An instructional sign shall not be larger than necessary to serve the intended instructional purpose and shall not exceed two (2) square feet in area and six (6) feet in height; (2) The number of instructional signs located on any lot shall be the minimum needed to serve the intended purpose; and
    • (3) An instructional sign shall not be legible or attract attention beyond the perimeter of the lot on which it is located.
  • (c) Temporary signs - No permit.
    • (1) One (1) temporary sign of four (4) square feet in area or less is permitted on each residential lot for up to thirty (30) consecutive days.
    • (2) Temporary signs shall not exceed six (6) feet in height and must be set back at least ten (10) feet from the right-of-way.
    • (3) Each temporary sign on a residential lot shall include the date the sign is first displayed in the lower right-hand corner.
    • (4) Unless the sign is provided by the Town, each temporary sign shall be constructed of a durable material and must be affixed to the ground or a structure so that it will remain in place.
    • (5) During election season, one (1) additional temporary sign per ballot issue or ballot candidate shall be permitted on each residential lot, and such temporary sign may remain erected for the duration of the election season. (d)
  • Temporary signs - Permit.
    • (1) In addition to the temporary sign allowed pursuant to Subsection (c) above, up to three (3) additional temporary signs of four (4) square feet in area or less is permitted on each residential lot for up to seven (7) consecutive days, four (4) times per calendar year, subject to the permitting requirements set forth in this Subsection.
    • (2) A permit shall be issued by the Town upon payment of the permit fee established by the Board of Trustees and completion of an application containing the following information:
      • a. Name, address and phone number of the applicant;
      • b. Time period during which the sign will be displayed;
      • c. Location of the sign;
      • d. Diagram and description of the sign, showing sign dimensions, height, acceptable material and method of affixing the sign in place;

How quickly do I need to remove snow from my sidewalk/driveway?

The short answer is within 48 hours after the cessation of snowfall. For the full municipal code see below.

 

Sec. 11-1-30. Removal of snow, ice and debris from sidewalks; notice and removal; nuisance.

  • (a) Every person in charge or control of any building or lot of land within the Town fronting or abutting on a paved sidewalk, whether as owner, tenant, occupant, lessee or otherwise, shall remove and clear away, or cause to be removed and cleared away, snow and ice from so much of such sidewalk as is in front or abuts on such building or lot of land, within forty-eight (48) hours after the cessation of any fall of snow, sleet or freezing rain, and shall then, as soon thereafter as weather permits, cause sidewalks to be thoroughly cleaned, including any debris thereon.
  • (b) In the event snow and ice on a sidewalk has become so hard that it cannot be removed without likelihood of damage to the sidewalk, the person or entity in charge of its removal shall, within forty- eight (48) hours after the cessation of any fall of snow, sleet or freezing rain, cause enough sand or other abrasive to be put on the sidewalk to make travel thereon reasonably safe, and shall then, as soon thereafter as weather permits, cause such sidewalk to be thoroughly cleaned.
  • (c) As used in this Section, the term sidewalk means that portion of a street between the curb lines, or the lateral lines of a roadway, and the adjacent property lines, intended for the use of pedestrians.
  • (d) Notice and removal; nuisance.
    • (1) The existence of snow, ice and debris on sidewalks in the Town in violation of the provisions of this Section is declared to be a public nuisance.
    • (2) Whenever an officer charged with the duty of enforcing this Section has knowledge of conditions in violation of this Section, but no person can be found in or upon the building or lot of land fronting or abutting on the sidewalk upon which such conditions exist, such conditions constituting a nuisance may be abated with notice under the provisions of Chapter 7 of this Code at the expense of the owner or such building or lot of land.
    • (3) Whenever any conditions constituting a nuisance under the provisions of this Section are found in existence more than twenty-four (24) hours after delivery of such notice or notification thereof for a person or entity charged with its removal, such nuisance may be abated without notice under the provisions of nuisance abatement at the expense of the person or entity charged with removal of snow, ice and debris.

I am leaving on vacation; will the police department do extra patrols of my residence?

If you are a resident of the Town of Elizabeth and are planning to be away on vacation, you may request an extra patrol or house watch on your home and street while you are away.

Is there a Juvenile Curfew in the Town of Elizabeth?

Yes, there is. Like many Towns, Elizabeth does have a curfew for those that have not reached their eighteenth (18) birthday. Please see the municipal ordinance below:

Sec. 10-6-70. - Curfew.

It is unlawful for any person who has not reached his or her eighteenth birthday to be or remain upon any public road, street or alley, to be or remain in any establishment open to the public, or to be or remain in any other public place in the Town after the hour of 10:00 p.m. on any Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, or after the hour of 12:00 midnight on any Friday or Saturday, or prior to the hour of 5:00 a.m. on any day except:

(1) When accompanied by a parent, guardian or other person having legal custody of such minor;

(2) For lawful employment when commuting directly to or from such employment and when carrying an employer's written and signed statement specifying the type, hours and place of employment; or

(3) When accompanied by a person who has reached his or her eighteenth birthday and who has in his or her possession the written and signed consent of the parent, guardian or other person having legal custody of the minor.

 

What do I do if I received a code violation warning notice?

What is a neighborhood watch?

Neighborhood Watch programs can help keep neighborhoods and communities safe. Starting your own crime prevention program—or reviving one that’s already been started in your neighborhood—can reduce crime in your area and give you a greater sense of security.

If you live in an area without a watch program, it is possible to begin your own. Crime prevention programs require organization, good communication with other people from your neighborhood and good problem-solving skills, but by working in partnership with the Elizabeth Police Department and your neighbors, you can start a successful crime watch group.

What should I do if I find a lost dog?

You should first ascertain if the dog was found in the municipal limits of Elizabeth. There are many of Elizabeth area street addresses that are actually in unincorporated Elbert County. If the dog is located in unincorporated Elbert County, the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office should be contacted at 303-621-2027.

If the dog was found within Town of Elizabeth limits, then you may first try to find out who the owner may be by checking for tags, asking neighbors etc. If the owner cannot be located, then you can call dispatch at 303-660-4500 to have an EPD Officer respond, or take the dog yourself to the nearest animal shelter, or lastly bring the dog to the Elizabeth Police Department located at 425 S. Main St. 

The Town of Elizabeth Police Department cannot accept dogs at large that are found outside the Town limits.

What telephone number should I call if I need an officer to respond?

There is a difference as to what telephone number you dial for the particular service you need.

If you have an emergency, please dial 911

If you require a police officer to respond to your location for a non-emergency call, you should dial the Dispatch number 303-660-7500.

If you require information of a general nature that does not require a police response to your location, please dial the front desk at 303-646-4664 Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Please note that police officers cannot be dispatched from the 303-646-4664 phone number. Due to rules of evidence and crime analysis, calls for service need to be recorded, digitally logged and then tracked.

When can I get fingerprinted?

Law Enforcement Agencies no longer provide fingerprint services to civilians.  This service is now provided by Colorado Applicant Background Services (CABS).  CABS is contracted by the State of Colorado and overseen by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI).  To make an appointment for fingerprints, please visit www.coloradofingerprinting.com OR call (720) 292-2722.  The closest Colorado Fingerprinting location to us will be at Douglas County Department of Human Services, 4400 Castleton Court, Castle Rock CO 80109 (Tuesdays & Thursdays only).  Or alternatively, you can visit www.uenroll.identogo.com OR call (844) 539-5539.  This is a different fingerprinting company that operates various locations in the greater Denver Metro region. OUR UNIQUE CBI CODE IS CONCJ6032.  You will need to provide this when you make your appointment.

When can I have a V.I.N Inspection?

This service is performed at the Police Station. The front office is open 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday, closed 12 pm to 1 pm for lunch and closed on Town observed Holidays.

Sometimes, the front office can get busy, and so it is preferred that you call first and make an appointment at 303-646-4664.

For residents of the Town of Elizabeth the V.I.N. verification is free of charge, for individuals that reside outside of Town limits the cost is $5.00 (cash only).

Will the Elizabeth Police Department hold onto my firearms for safekeeping?

Unfortunately no. The Elizabeth Police Department cannot hold firearms for safekeeping.
